Island Exploration Guide: Every Location in Windrose

Date Published

Windrose naval combat - ship pursuit

The world of Windrose is an archipelago of islands, each with unique biomes, enemies, dungeons, and resources. Knowing what awaits you at each location is essential for planning your progression. This guide covers every known location, organized by tier.

Understanding Location Tiers

Locations in Windrose are rated by tier, which indicates the difficulty of enemies and the quality of resources found there. Tier 1 locations are beginner-friendly, while Tier 3 areas contain the game's toughest challenges and rarest materials. Attempting Tier 3 content with Tier 1 gear will end badly, so progress through the tiers in order.

Tier 1 -- The Starting Region

Starting Island

Biome: Coastal Jungle | Type: Island

Your first home. The Starting Island is a gentle introduction to Windrose's systems. The terrain features beaches, light forests, and clearings perfect for your first base. Resources here include Timber, Tree Bark, Healing Herbs, Flax Fiber, and basic foodstuffs.

Wildlife includes passive Dodos (Level 1) and hostile Crabs (Level 1) along the beaches. Neither poses a serious threat, making this the perfect place to practice combat fundamentals and learn dodge timing.

Underground Chambers

Type: Dungeon | Tier: 1

The first dungeon most players will encounter. The Underground Chambers are located on the Starting Island and contain stronger enemies than the overworld, along with lootable containers holding better equipment and crafting materials. This dungeon serves as a tutorial for the game's dungeon mechanics: limited light, tighter spaces, and enemies that can ambush from around corners.

Clear this dungeon before leaving the Starting Island to ensure you are properly geared for Tier 2 content.

Copper Caves

Type: Point of Interest | Tier: 1

A resource-rich cave system on the Starting Island. The Copper Caves are your primary source of early-game ore for smelting. Bring a light source and watch for Crabs that nest in the darker passages.

Pirate Camps

Type: Point of Interest | Tier: 1

Scattered encampments of low-level Pirates. These camps offer your first taste of fighting humanoid enemies who block, dodge, and use weapons of their own. Raiding them yields equipment, ammunition, and crafting materials.

Tier 2 -- The Middle Islands

Second Island

Type: Island | Tier: 2

The natural next step after the Starting Island. The Second Island features more varied terrain, tougher wildlife including Boars (Level 1) and Pirates (Level 2), and access to mid-tier resources like Foothills Iron Ore. Your ship upgrade path begins here in earnest.

Foothills

Type: Biome | Tier: 2

A mountainous region with rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. The Foothills are home to Drowned Sailors (Level 2, Undead) and wild Boars. The area is rich in iron ore deposits and Mountain Goat Horn, both essential for Tier 2 crafting recipes. Navigate carefully, as the uneven terrain can make combat treacherous.

Nassau

Type: Settlement | Tier: 2

The first major settlement you will encounter. Nassau is a trading hub where you can buy and sell goods, accept quests from NPCs, and access services not available at your own base. Key NPCs here include quest givers and merchants who offer unique items and recipes.

Smuggler Den

Type: Dungeon | Tier: 1

A hidden pirate hideout filled with traps and hostile smugglers. Despite its Tier 1 rating, the Smuggler Den can catch unprepared players off guard with its confined spaces and ambush encounters. The loot here includes pirate-themed equipment and rare crafting materials.

Tier 3 -- The Frontier

Swamps

Type: Biome | Tier: 3

A dangerous wetland region shrouded in fog and filled with hostile fauna. The Cursed Swamps are home to the fearsome Swamp Creature (Level 4, Supernatural), one of the toughest non-boss enemies in the game. Unique resources like Plague Wood, Quagmire Powder, and the coveted Swamp Creature's Tooth weapon can only be found here.

Come prepared with strong weapons, plenty of food, and ideally a group. The terrain is difficult to navigate, with shallow water slowing your movement and obscuring enemy positions.

Tortuga

Type: Settlement | Tier: 3

The legendary pirate haven. Tortuga is the game's most advanced settlement, offering high-end merchants, faction questlines, and access to endgame content. Key NPCs like Blackbeard (the game's main antagonist) and Rosalinda Mercer can be found here. Tortuga is also the launching point for the final quest chain: Challenge Blackbeard.

Exploration Tips

  • Always build a Fast Travel Point at each new location you plan to revisit.

  • Carry a mix of healing food and combat consumables when exploring unknown areas.

  • Dungeons reset after a period, so you can farm them repeatedly for materials and gear.

  • Check every corner for lootable containers. Dungeons especially reward thorough exploration.

  • If an area's enemies are significantly higher level than you, retreat and return after upgrading your gear.
