Beginner's Guide to Windrose
Date Published

Welcome to Windrose, a PvE open-world survival crafting game set across a sprawling pirate archipelago. Whether you have just washed ashore or you are still deciding whether to set sail, this guide covers everything you need to know to survive your first hours and build a strong foundation for the adventures ahead.
Your First Steps on the Starting Island
After the opening cinematic, you will find yourself stranded on the Starting Island, a Coastal Jungle zone designed as a safe introduction to the game's core mechanics. Your first objective is to complete the Islander Tutorial quest chain, which walks you through gathering, crafting, combat basics, and base building.
Start by collecting basic resources nearby: pick up Timber from fallen logs, gather Healing Herbs, and harvest Tree Bark. These early materials are the building blocks for your first tools and structures. Do not wander too far right away. Dodos and Crabs roam the beaches and serve as your first combat encounters, both sitting at Level 1.
Understanding the Four Attributes
Windrose's character progression is built around four core attributes, each governing different weapon types and playstyles:
Strength -- Governs Crude damage and knockdown chance. Scales with Clubs and Halberds. Choose Strength if you enjoy staggering enemies with heavy, deliberate blows.
Agility -- Governs Slash damage and reduces dash stamina cost. Scales with Sabers, Greatswords, and Blunderbusses. A versatile attribute for players who like fluid, mobile combat.
Precision -- Governs Pierce damage and critical hit chance. Scales with Rapiers, Pistols, and Muskets. Ideal for players who prefer calculated strikes and ranged engagement.
Vitality -- Governs maximum health and defensive scaling. While primarily a survivability attribute, some unique weapons like the Soul Eater greatsword also scale with Vitality.
You can invest points into multiple attributes, but most builds benefit from focusing on one primary attribute and supplementing with Vitality for survivability.
Crafting Your First Base
Base building is essential in Windrose. Your first priority should be placing a Bonfire, which acts as a respawn point and a light source. Next, build a Workbench to unlock basic crafting recipes, followed by a Cooking Fire so you can prepare food for health regeneration and buffs.
As you progress, you will unlock specialized stations like the Smelting Furnace for processing ores, the Tanning Rig for leather, and the Weaponsmith for forging proper weapons. Each station opens up a new tier of recipes and materials.
Combat Basics and Weapon Types
Windrose features Soulslite combat, meaning positioning, stamina management, and timing are critical. Every attack costs stamina, and running out mid-fight leaves you vulnerable. Learn to read enemy attack patterns and dodge at the right moment.
The game offers eight weapon types spread across melee and ranged categories:
Melee: Sabers (fast slashes), Rapiers (precise thrusts), Clubs (heavy strikes), Halberds (long reach), and Greatswords (sweeping two-handed attacks)
Ranged: Pistols (quick sidearm), Muskets (long-range precision), and Blunderbusses (close-range spread)
Start with whatever weapon you find first, but pay attention to its scaling attribute. A Saber scales with Agility, so pairing it with Agility investment will yield the best damage output.
Early Progression Tips
Complete the Islander Tutorial fully -- it rewards useful starter gear and teaches essential mechanics you will rely on throughout the game.
Cook food early and often -- even simple recipes like Dodo Broth or Coconut Milk With Bananas provide meaningful buffs that make early fights much easier.
Build a Fast Travel Point at your base as soon as possible. The island may seem small now, but backtracking wastes valuable time.
Talk to Doctor Galen -- he is the NPC who kicks off the main story quest chain, Doctor Galen's Request, and guides you toward the open sea.
Do not neglect your Talent Tree -- even a few early points in your chosen branch (Fencer, Crusher, Marksman, or Toughguy) provide noticeable power spikes.
Preparing to Leave the Starting Island
Once you have completed the tutorial, built a basic base, and geared up with Uncommon-tier weapons and armor, it is time to set your sights on the wider archipelago. Craft or find a Rowboat to begin island-hopping. The Second Island (Tier 2) is your next destination, offering tougher enemies like Pirates and Drowned Sailors, richer resources, and access to the settlement of Nassau.
From there, the world of Windrose opens up dramatically: dungeon delving in the Underground Chambers, faction dealings in Tortuga, and eventually the treacherous Cursed Swamps and the path to confronting Blackbeard himself.
Take your time, experiment with different builds, and remember: every pirate legend started with a castaway on a beach.
