Sow

Animal

The Sow is a deceptively dangerous Level 3 Animal found on the Starting Island, and it serves as an early wake-up call for overconfident players. While it shares the same general appearance as the common Boar, the Sow is noticeably larger, more aggressive, and deals significantly higher damage per hit. Many new players make the mistake of engaging a Sow with the same casual approach they use on Dodos and Boars, only to find themselves quickly overwhelmed by its relentless attacks and surprisingly deep health pool. The Sow is Windrose's way of teaching a critical survival lesson: not every creature on a beginner island is a beginner-level threat.

Sows patrol the inland areas of the Starting Island, often near forested clearings and along the paths connecting the beach to the Copper Caves. Their territory sometimes overlaps with regular Boar spawns, which can create confusing and lethal situations for players who do not check enemy levels before engaging. The high damage output of the Sow makes it one of the most punishing enemies in the early game, capable of killing under-geared players in just two or three hits. Because of this, the Sow is best avoided entirely until you have crafted at least a basic set of Rough Hide armor from Boar drops and obtained a reliable melee weapon from the Smuggler Den or early crafting stations.

If you decide to take on a Sow, preparation is everything. Bring cooked Meat for healing, equip your best available armor, and choose a weapon with decent reach so you can land hits without standing directly in front of its charge. The Sow uses a faster, more aggressive version of the Boar's lunge attack, and it chains multiple strikes in quick succession rather than pausing between charges. Dodge-rolling to the side remains effective, but your timing window is much tighter. Fighting near obstacles like rocks or fallen trees can help break line of sight and interrupt the Sow's charge pattern. Once defeated, the Sow provides generous experience points and material drops, making it a worthwhile challenge for players who are properly prepared and looking to level up before heading to the Second Island.
