Enemy
Mercenary
Pirate
The Mercenary is a Pirate-type enemy ranging from Level 3 to Level 5, found guarding camps and key points of interest across the islands of Windrose. These hardened fighters are a cut above the common Pirate, equipped with better armor, stronger weapons, and more aggressive combat behavior. Mercenaries often appear alongside regular Pirates at fortified camps, but they can also be encountered at standalone POIs, abandoned outposts, and along trade routes between settlements. Their presence signals that the area holds something valuable, whether it is a resource cache, a dungeon entrance, or a strategic position worth controlling.
Mercenaries are particularly worth hunting for their drop table, which includes armor pieces, Gunpowder, and occasionally rare equipment. The armor drops can range from leather reinforcements to metal plating, giving players a chance to piece together protective gear without the full crafting investment. Gunpowder drops from Mercenaries tend to come in larger quantities than those from regular Pirates, making them an efficient source for players who need this critical material in bulk. Some Mercenaries also carry specialized weapons and tools that cannot be obtained through standard crafting, adding a collector's incentive to seek them out. Farming Mercenary-heavy camps near the Foothills and the Second Island is a reliable mid-game strategy for gearing up before pushing into Tier 3 zones like the Swamps.
Combat with Mercenaries demands respect and preparation. They hit harder and faster than standard Pirates, and their improved armor means fights last longer, draining your healing resources if you are not efficient with your damage output. Mercenaries often employ feint attacks, mixing up their timing to catch players who rely on predictable dodge patterns. The best approach is to equip your strongest weapon, bring a shield capable of absorbing heavy blows, and wear at least medium-tier armor before engaging. Try to isolate Mercenaries from their allies by using terrain and ranged pulls, because fighting a Mercenary alongside two or three regular Pirates simultaneously is a recipe for a quick death. Status effects like poison or bleed are effective at wearing down their larger health pools over time. Players heading to Pirate Camps that include Mercenaries should stock up on healing items and consider bringing a backup weapon in case their primary breaks mid-fight.
