Fists

Fists represent the default unarmed combat option in Windrose, available to every player at all times regardless of inventory or equipment status. As a Common-tier weapon with no special scaling or bonus effects, Fists are the baseline against which all other weapons are measured. They are automatically equipped whenever you have no weapon in your active slot, ensuring you are never completely defenseless even if you lose your gear to death penalties, inventory mishaps, or simply choosing to travel light.

While Fists lack the damage output, scaling bonuses, and special effects of dedicated weapons, they do offer one practical advantage: zero weight and zero resource cost. In situations where inventory management is critical, such as long salvage runs or treasure-hunting expeditions on the Starting Island, unequipping your weapon to fight bare-handed frees up a slot for additional loot. The Fists moveset is also surprisingly fast, with quick jab combos that can stagger smaller enemies and interrupt attack animations if timed correctly. Against the weakest enemies in starting areas, Fists can get the job done when nothing else is available.

From a progression standpoint, Fists serve as a reminder to prioritize acquiring a real weapon as soon as possible. The Club and Rapier are both Uncommon weapons that dramatically outclass unarmed combat in every measurable way, and both become available early in the game. If you find yourself relying on Fists for more than the first few minutes of gameplay, focus on exploring crafting stations and enemy drops to secure an upgrade. That said, some challenge-run players have embraced Fists-only playthroughs as an ultimate test of skill, relying entirely on dodge timing, Perfect Blocks, and consumable items to compensate for the lack of weapon damage. These runs are not recommended for newcomers but showcase just how deep the combat system in Windrose truly is.
