Retaliation

Buff

Retaliation is an offensive buff granted by the Dueling Saber and the Greatsword, rewarding players who land hits without taking damage in return. Each stack provides a significant damage increase: +10% per stack with the Dueling Saber and +15% per stack with the Greatsword. However, the buff carries a critical drawback. The moment the wielder takes any damage, all Retaliation stacks are immediately removed. This high-risk, high-reward mechanic makes Retaliation one of the most skill-dependent status effects in Windrose.

Building and maintaining Retaliation stacks demands exceptional positioning and timing. Players must land attacks while avoiding all incoming damage, which favors evasive playstyles built around perfect dodges and careful spacing. The Dueling Saber's faster attack speed makes it easier to accumulate stacks quickly, while the Greatsword's higher per-stack bonus rewards those who can maintain stacks with a slower weapon. Talents that improve dodge distance, reduce dodge stamina cost, or grant brief invincibility frames synergize perfectly with Retaliation builds, as survivability directly translates to damage output.

The counterplay against Retaliation is straightforward but requires execution: land any hit on the wielder to strip all their stacks instantly. Fast, multi-hit weapons like rapiers and dual blades are ideal for this purpose, as even a glancing blow resets the buff entirely. Area-of-effect attacks and status effects like Fire Damage from Dragon's Breath are also effective, since the damage ticks will repeatedly strip Retaliation stacks before they can be rebuilt. When facing a Retaliation user who has accumulated several stacks, trading a small amount of health to land a single hit is almost always worthwhile, as it eliminates their entire damage bonus in one stroke.
